Futsal: The Shorter Version of Football

Futsal is a game that is commonly called 'indoor soccer' or indoor football'. The reason is that the rules that govern the game are comparable to soccer and it is played indoors. The pitch, or court, used to play this game is entirely different from that of soccer. I will be making some elaborate points on the court used for futsal later in this article. There are some club-level futsal games too being played around the world about which I will be covering briefly later in this article.
The rules that govern futsal are very much similar to soccer. The reason for that can be attributed to the fact the rules were framed by FIFA (International Federation of Association Football). FIFA is the same body that handles the bigger version of futsal (soccer). There is a stark difference in the number of players playing the game as opposed to soccer. A total of 10 players play futsal with each team consisting of 5 players. Of the five players in each team, one player guards the goal post. He is called the goalkeeper. Goalkeeper is the most important player of a team as he stops the ball from entering the goal post. Just like soccer, substitutes, fouls, yellow cards and red cards are used in futsal as well. Futsal is played for a total duration of 40 minutes which is divided into two halves. The team which has the maximum number of goals at the end of 40 minutes is declared the winner.
Unlike soccer, the court in which futsal is played is not made of grass. Usually, hard material such as wood is used to construct the futsal court. Hence, the court surface is very hard. The typical length of a futsal court doesn't exceed forty metres with the width being around twenty five metres. The goal post is the most important part of a futsal court. There are two goal posts, one for each team. Each goal post is rectangular in shape. Since it is an indoor sport, the court is covered at the top by a roof.
Just like how club leagues exist in soccer, club-level leagues exist in futsal too. This league level futsal is played in all the continents. The most prominent among the league tournaments held for futsal include 'UEFA Futsal Championship' which is held in Europe,' AFC Futsal Championship' in Asia and the 'African Futsal Championship'.
This article is by no means an in-depth article on futsal. Actually, it is not meant to give you comprehensive information about futsal. But, it covers the basics of futsal which would make you want to do further research about the sport.
